But, the voices of women, low paid workers, lone parents, older people, children with learning difficulties, gay and lesbian people, Travellers, migrants, and many others living on the edges of society have been taken away.

The state bodies established to support social justice and fairness for all have been dismantled in a matter of months. Combat Poverty Agency is muzzled. NCCRI is abolished. The Equality Authority and the Irish Human Rights Commission cannot function properly.

What’s worse, many representative groups are afraid to speak out in case they too are silenced under the guise of recession economics.

Equality & Rights Alliance will vigorously monitor Government actions.

Remind him that at the World Social Development Summit (Copenhagen 1995) the Irish government pledged to:

• Create a society for all.
• Promote the equitable distribution of income and greater access to resources for all.
• Recognise that economic growth should promote equity, social justice and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
