Budget 2009 will, in effect, defeat the legislative intent of the Oireachtas when it established the two bodies as part of a new infrastructure to promote and enforce equality and rights. They will not be able to carry out necessary research. They will not be able to conduct independent surveys and inquiries. They will not be able to raise awareness of people’s equal rights and entitlements.
Despite Ireland’s growing tolerance, gay and lesbian people continue to be discriminated against. How will people like the construction worker who was found to have been sexually harassed and discriminated against because of his sexual orientation know that they can seek legal support? Even if they do know, will there be any point in knocking on the doors of nullified agencies?
On behalf of all gay and lesbian people, we are asking politicians to wake up to the attack on equality and human rights in Budget 2009.
