In July this year, the UN Human Rights Committee recommended that the Government should strengthen the independence and capacity of the Irish Human Rights Commission by endowing it with adequate and sufficient resources and linking it to the Oireachtas.
The Irish answer to an Irish problem? Cut the budget by 24%.
The IHRC has consistently called for action against the inequalities suffered by Travellers at a national and an international level, predicting that the Government refusal to recognise Travellers as a separate ethnic minority will have a detrimental effect on that community.
With depleted resources, who will continue to work for equality of opportunity and legal recognition of Travellers and other ethnic groups?
On behalf of Travellers and all members of ethnic groups, we are asking politicians to wake up to the attack on equality and human rights in Budget 2009.
