ENAR Ireland salutes the work of Niall Crowley
European Network Against Racism (ENAR) Ireland: Ireland Loses on Equality as Niall Crowley Resigns his Position as CEO of the Equality Authority!
‘The resignation of Niall Crowley as CEO of the Equality Authority marks a sad day for Ireland’s ability to combat discrimination and inequality’ stated Triona Ni Giolla Coille the Irish Board representative of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR). ‘Niall has been to the forefront of this country’s efforts to promote equality. The circumstances surrounding his resignation indicate a dramatic row back on the Irish state’s commitment to tackle inequality.’
Raluca Anucuta, Alternate Board member of ENAR praised the work of the Equality Authority under the leadership of Niall, in confronting difficult and challenging issues, like racism, sexism, homophobia while always presenting constructive solutions to overcome deeply rooted inequalities. She said, ‘the cuts to the Equality Authority budget are an indication that this government is lacking clear thinking when it comes to handling the economic crisis we are in. Inequality damages society and in the long run slashing the equality infrastructure will only generate even greater costs than the small savings used as justification for the recent cuts’.
Triona concluded saying, ‘Niall has shown the type of leadership this country needs and instead of recognizing this and supporting his efforts he has been placed in an untenable position. ENAR Ireland deeply regrets this fact and has recommitted itself to doubling its efforts in the fight against racism and discrimination.’
