Equality & Rights Alliance (ERA) today urged the Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform to WAKE UP AND CALL TIME on the budgetary cuts to The Equality Authority and the Irish Human Right Commission, saying that there was much more to the budget action than a financial agenda.

The Alliance of 67 civil society organizations said that there were valid fears that the decimation of the Equality Authority and the Irish Human Rights Commission had more to do with culling watchdogs than saving money.  For example, it questioned whether the fact that the majority of the casefiles supported by the Equality Authority were against the public sector was a factor influencing the decision to effectively close it down.
